A natural paradise

A natural paradiseIt has a land area of ​​2,171 sea hectares and 470 land hectares. It is located in the Rías Baixas and for social reasons -and not of proximity- belong to the municipality of Bueu, in the province of Pontevedra (Galicia, Spain).

Is composed of the Island of Ons and several islets, such as Onza, Centolo or the Freitosas. The Island of Ons is approximately 6 km long and 1.5 km wide, with a maximum height located in the Ons Lighthouse, 128 m. It has two very contrasted faces, the one that directly faces the Atlantic Ocean, is the steepest, with soft cliffs and numerous caves (in Galicia, well known as furnas).

 

The part that gives towards the firm ground, on the contrary, softer, characterized by its white sand beaches and where we can find the houses of the island, all of them oriented towards the interior of the estuary.

As of July 1, 2002, the island is integrated into the Maritime - Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia.

In order to avoid environmental aggressions, several protection measures have been adopted that join the figure of the Park: in 2001 the Island of Ons was demarcated as ZEPA [Special Protection Area for Birds]; in 2004, the Ons-O Grove Intertidal Complex was declared a Site of Community Importance; also in 2004, Zone of Special Protection of the Natural Values; and OSPAR Zone (in 2008).
